Lectures – Agathe Simon

Further to creative residencies in Antarctica (2014) and the Arctic (2016), Agathe Simon gives lectures-performances presenting her experiences in the polar regions, with narrated screening of her films. She also evokes the creation process, as well as the legendary figure of Gabriela Conti (1974-2010), to whom she dedicated her double exhibition The Polar Project.

Agathe Simon is a Paris-based artist, born in 1977. As a Ph.D. recipient from the Sorbonne University and the Paris Conservatory, she has taught several years at the University of Cergy-Pontoise, the University of Paris-Sorbonne, and the University of Paris-Diderot. From 2007 on, and over a decade, she travelled throughout the world invited for art residencies, lecture-performances, and exhibitions. She has also carried out initiatic journeys in Central Africa, Peru, and Antarctica. On her return to Paris in 2017, she created an art company, The Group. Since September 2018, she has been teaching in the Department of Literature, Arts and Cinema at the University of Paris-Diderot.

The lecture which Agathe Simon gave at the University of Aix-Marseille, France, in the frame of my MBA seminar Visual Arts and Sciences of Art, was lived by the students and myself both as an input of high-level scientific knowledge and a veritable art performance. The students were really impressed by her performative narratives between reality and fiction about Arctica, Antarctica and the activities of The Group. Thank you, Agathe Simon, for contributing to the creation of an original ecology of art thanks to new narratives of the world!

Agathe Simon demonstrates excellent skills in artistic research. She has a broad focus of interest and knowledge in diverse fields that, together with a strong feeling of the contemporary context worldwide, allow her to raise very relevant problematics and work with them on a highly professional level.

Head of the Museum of Nonconformist Art | Russia
The lecture by Agathe Simon is one of the key moments of my lecture course, an introduction to geosciences, for the last three years. She engages the students in a root-and-branch debate about truth and fiction, about the common qualities of the researcher and the artist, about freedom, and about penguin feces. This artistic intrusion is a lesson of life for the first-year university level students in sciences.
Professor Bertrand Maillot
Director of the Laboratory GEC at the University of Cergy-Pontoise, France
I was pleased to attend to a lecture-performance by Agathe Simon. We were caught up by the artist in a fiction where it was hard to identify real facts. Agathe mesmerized me, I took a trip with her, far away to the ice-packed realms of an imaginary world.
